Copyright infringment by Madrid design collective.

Hey everyone!

Wow, what a long time it’s been since we were able to post on here.

Much has happened in the year I have been away, I intend to update you all as best as I can in the coming weeks (along with some new and exciting projects).

I have been informed by a few people, who visited Madrid and saw this:

The shop window in question is for a design collective in Madrid.

This creates conflicting emotions in me. Firstly I’m really happy to see the Duck being used in big projects.

However, The duck is licensed to be free for all to use and remix as the like, as long as it’s not for profit. (the full license can be seen here)

NB – For anyone new to the free range duck project, it’s about spreading an image for fun, not money. Almost every image you see in your day will be selling a product or brand to you – it’s depressing. We just want to make you smile!

This means the design collective is in breach of copyright. This is their business, they should surely know better?

So what has been done about it?

I sent multiple emails to the email address listed on the perpetrators website, in English and in Spanish – no reply.
I then recieved word that they are still using the image in their window.

Cue facebook action.
Myself and many of the duck loving army, protested on their facebook page. Posting links to this site & the creative commons license in English and Spanish. These got deleted. (So they were read).

What next?

Continued promotion on their facebook page using this image:

If you can link to this blog on their facebook page, email them and get ourselves noticed.
I shall be sending a recorded delivery letter informing them of their copyright infringement and request to remove the offending images from their windows.
Any other action you can recommend, please add a comment to this blog.

Hey Stoo, as soon as I get off the mobile and onto a desktop I’ll be linking on their Facebook page and supporting you any way I can.

It’s disappointing that they are trying to ignore you. They should do the right thing and admit their mistake.

    following message appears:
“This post will appear in the others filters”.

So posting the website on their facebook page doesnt work anymore.

It shows up on the “wall + others” bit of their facebook page.
Hopefully it should be sorted now, we shall see once our spies check out their window display!

    Thanks for the help :)

My question is, for those who love the duck and want to get it on a shirt or a sticker what can we do? As it’s not for profit. Any suggestions/recommendations?

    Hey Daniel,

You can definitely use the duck for a T-shirt, or sticker as long as you don’t sell it! (or use it to promote something that makes money)
You can grab the vector file or .png from the resources page!

Send us pictures of whatever you produce!
